Figured I’d mix things around today and put a post from a fellow writer at Random Curiosity, Zanibas. A kind of impressions post on the visual novel Hatoful Boyfriend. Maybe you’ve heard of this rumored post before, as it was meant to be a post for April Fool’s a few months back. Maybe not. Either way, due to certain circumstances, the release of the post never made it for April Fool’s, and has been in the void for a bit. But today, Hateful Boyfriend makes its triumphant debut!

Happy Anniversary Hatoful Boyfriend, and a Merry April Fools Day to you too, dear reader! ^^
Anon on my Katawa Shoujo post was wonderful for introducing a game like this to me. I immediately went to buy the game…and it truly did not disappoint. I have not laughed harder at a game than the first few minutes playing.
The premise is as follows. You’re the only human, and only human female, attending St. PigeoNation’s Institute, “the most splendid and greatest academy of the pigeon, by the pigeon and for the pigeon.”
Haven’t derped or ragequit yet? Good. So you get to befriend many a male pigeon, and depending on the stats you level up and the selections you make, maybe you’ll end up with one of them!
…and that’s pretty much the plot. Granted, I haven’t played through every route, but this is how I predict the breakdown is.
90% of the ends are actually pretty cool in terms of story. For one of the routes, I found myself feeling for the bird as he expressed his woes, and I couldn’t help but think…”If only I could exchange this bird for it’s character portrait again ;_;” The music during these scenes surprisingly are simplistic and emotional, so much that I wished the OST was included.
As for the other 10%…well…that needs no explanation. Just moar wut.
However, in the process of getting there, it is 100% impossible to avoid any sort of shenanigans. So no matter whether you’re going for the cross-dresser, the bookie, or perhaps the pudding-obsessed-man, you will find something that’ll just make you (╯°□°）╯︵ ┻━┻ (in a good way)
In fact, this is a great “I laugh I lose” game to playthrough! If you’re the silly type like me, you’d lose in the first prompt. However, I challenge all of you who would get this game not to laugh. With a premise as ridiculous as this…I’d call it impossible!
